Regrettably, when most individuals find themselves responsible for managing a team of people for the first time they receive no training or practical advice on how to go about it. There will probably be lots of material available on topics such as health and safety, or how to complete particular forms for instance, but rarely is the difficult subject of people management given anything more than a cursory conversation.

There are many different aspects to being a manager of people:

  • The management itself, ensuring that tasks are achieved on time and to the standard required.
  • Motivating the team, obviously a skill that simply appears naturally once you get that promotion to manager!
  • The development of the people who work for you to improve their knowledge and skills, often covered by coaching.
  • Leadership, a word that is often used when discussing managers or management but, in our experience, it is more often a word that is misused.

Leadership qualities, like all the other elements of management, can be learned and developed. Also, like all skills, some are more natural leaders than others but all people managers can improve their performance by improving their leadership. A Sporting Difference training programme will show you, in an interesting and engaging way, how to deal with the difficult elements of being a people manager. You will learn why people sometimes behave the way they do and you’ll have a suite of tools and ideas that you can use in many different situations.
